Hello to State Farm and our South Sound CPCUs! We are excited to be back in the south sound area. Please join us for our next Pacific Northwest CPCU Chapter luncheon on Thursday, October 6 at State Farm Insurance in the Northwest Conference Room.

This month we are focusing on CLAIMS with our guest speaker, Allan Tenser, Ph.D. on the topic of "Use of biomechanics to study and evaluate the effect of low speed rear impact auto accidents."

We look forward to seeing you on October 6!

Allan F. Tencer, Ph.D

I was born in Montreal, Canada and completed my engineering training to the Master’s level in Mechanical Engineering. After working in industry for 2 years at the Aluminum Co of Canada and gaining my registration as a Professional Engineer, I returned to McGill University to pursue a PhD. My thesis, which was a detailed anatomical and mechanical study of the human lumbar spine was supervised by Professors of Mechanical Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery. After completing my thesis in 1981, I was recruited to the University of Texas and became an assistant professor in bioengineering/orthopedic surgery. I established a laboratory at the VA Hospital in South Dallas, TX and began to work on research related to orthopedic trauma surgery. After 3 years I was recruited to the UT medical branch in Galveston, TX where I was appointed assistant professor of surgery and continued my research. I worked very closely with orthopedic surgeons, especially those with specialties in the spine and wrist. After 4 years there I was again recruited this time to the University of Washington where I was appointed Associate Professor in Orthopedics, Bioengineering, and Mechanical Engineering. I established a laboratory at Harborview Medical Center and again continued my research, expanding into research on the foot, the knee, the hip, the pelvis, and later, the head. I taught orthopedic residents on the topic of biomechanics as well as supervising a number of graduate students to the Master’s or PhD level. I was able to win a number of federal grants to support my research. In 1997 I was promoted to Full Professor. I also expanded my research interests to include injury prevention, mostly related to auto collisions and falls. After 26 years at the UW and more than 150 published articles, I retired at the end of 2013.
